School, city filings begin

Wednesday, Jan. 18 was the first day to file for a place on the May 2023 General Election Ballot. Filing goes through February 17 for the May 6 election, which will feature both school and city candidates.

In Marble Falls, two people filed so far for city council including f o r m e r councilor C r a i g Ma g erkurth. On the first day, he filed to run for the place 6 position.

Mag- e r k u r t h most re- c e n t l y s e r v ed on the Ma r b le Falls City Co u n c il from May 2 0 1 6 to May 2 0 2 2 . The place he chose is currently being held by Councilman Reed Norman.

The following places on the Marble Falls City Council are up for election during the May 6 election:

• Mayor, currently being held by Richard Westerman (who has filed); • Place 2 – Dave Rhodes; • Place 4 – Bryan Walker; • Place 6 – Reed Norman;

Westerman also filed to run for re-election on the first day. Not only is he the current may- or, but he was elected to the council a number of times during the past three decades and also served as mayor in the late 1990s.

Westerman, a lighting sales specialists, and president/CEO of JB Sales, Inc. He opened his first electric supply com pany in January of 1987 and the second in 1989, according to his online biography.

Then, in April of 1994 he opened a light- ing showroom in the community. In 1999, he launched Systems By Design which designed and installed home systems including home theater, security, central vac, and AV.

Magerkurth’s online biography states that he is vice president of data analytics for Unitas Global from June 2022 to present; the bio also states he has worked as a data analysts capacity since at least 2009, worked construction prior to that and is a US Army veteran and served for several years with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Granite Shoals

On Jan. 18 Jim Da - vant, a retired financial consultant, became the first candidate to file for election as mayor of the city of Granite Shoals.

Davant previously served on the Granite Shoals City Council from October 2016 to February 2021.

“Prior to his tenure on city council, he volunteered on the city’s street and water committee as well as the planning and zoning committee. He has also been a CASA (Court-appointed Special Advocates) volunteer for six years,” according to a statement he provided to The Highlander.

Davant and his wife Susan, a retired math teacher, have lived in Granite Shoals since 2012.

They moved to Granite Shoals from San An- tonio where they lived for nearly 30 years, he continued. The couple has two married children

and three grandchildren. Davant retired from Raymond James where he served as a financial consultant.

In Granite Shoals, positions up for election in May are place 1 (Ron Munos), 2 (Kevin Flak), 3 (Samantha Ortis) and 5 (Michael Berg) as well as mayor (Aaron Garcia).

Michael Berg, who is a self employed recent council appointee, also filed on the first day to run for his place 5 position.
