From staff reports

A large sinkhole in US 281 South in front of the new 7-11 in Marble Falls has caused delays for motorists on a busy Thursday, Aug. 19.

According to Burnet County Judge James Oakley, the roadway caved in as a result of a road bore for a drainage line on the east side of the highway, just north of Farm to Market Road 2147 East.

For a while, northbound US 281 traffic was being diverted to FM 2147 east, while southbound traffic was being diverted all the way back at the FM 2147/Gateway Loop intersection (near Starbucks and CVS). Marble Falls police had been asking motorists to “avoid the area and look for alternate routes of travel.

“Please be patient. Roadway crews are working as diligently as possible to fix the problem. Please be mindful of first responders in the area,” MFPD said in a Facebook post Thursday.

At 8:30 a.m., the west side of US 281 was opened up with separate lanes of traffic for northbound and southbound vehicles and motorists were warned to still “continue to expect significant delays.”
