Harold Dean Hammons passed from this life on December 20, 2023, in Burnet.

Harold Dean was born in Spicewood, Texas, in 1935. His family worshiped with the church of Christ in Spicewood. He attended lower grades at what is now called the Old Spicewood Community Schoolhouse and played sports whenever possible. At the age of 16, Harold graduated from Marble Falls High School and left Spicewood to attend Abilene Christian College.

After earning a Business Administration degree in 1955, Harold took a job with Humble Oil. He worked his way up through the company, initially pumping gas at stations, then driving oil trucks, and eventually traveling across the southwest checking on service stations. Taking a sales position, Harold moved to Phoenix, where he found friends who shared his love of hunting and fishing.

Phoenix is also where Harold met his wife, Doris. The couple relocated in 1966 for Harold to take a position with Exxon in Portland, Oregon. There, they welcomed two sons, Harold Logan and Paul Lawrence. The couple loved living in the northwest, where Harold often went salmon fishing with friends and took the family on road trips around the region.

Moving back to Texas in 1969, Harold and Doris settled in Austin and soon welcomed a daughter, Amy Leigh. Over the years that followed, Harold took his family back to Spicewood regularly to help his parents garden, work with cattle, and picnic in the country. He hunted and fished with family and friends, and occasionally golfed when time allowed. His golfing game would ramp up in later years.

When the family moved to Austin, Harold initially worked with his father building houses and managing residential real estate, but then went to work for the State of Texas. He retired in 1995 from the Texas Department of Health. When Doris retired, the couple moved to Burnet.

Devout Christians, Harold and Doris have worshiped and worked with Christians throughout their marriage.

With each congregation, they have cultivated wonderful friendships that have enriched their lives. Through the years, Harold preached occasionally and taught bible classes. His greatest comfort in life, aside from the love and companionship of his wife, was the knowledge that his children were baptized into Christ and have remained faithful and diligent in God’s service.

Harold and Doris enjoyed a full and happy life together. The couple traveled often during retirement, typically taking a spring trip to see the countryside bloom and a fall trip to see the leaves change.

Over the last 25 years, the couple spent every day together, taking joy in one another and the blessings of this life. Harold passed on their 60th wedding anniversary.

A memorial service for Harold took place in Burnet on January 13, 2024.
