Hunters prep for start of rifle season this weekend in Burnet, Llano Counties

Those who love to hunt and who might feel disappointed when the season ends might be thrilled to learn that local counties are offering extended hunting seasons. This applies mostly to deer and to birds, with the rules being same for both Burnet and Llano counties. White-tailed Deer: General season for whitetailed deer is Nov. 5, 2022 to Jan. 1, 2023. There are two youth-only seasons: early is Oct. 29-30, and late is Jan. 2-15, 2023. For the deer, archery only is Oct. 1 to Nov. 4, 2022. A special late season, restricted to antlerless deer or unbranched antlered bucks (no more than one point) will be Jan.

3-16, 2023. Bag limit is five deer, no more than two bucks, all seasons combined.

Special Late Season Jan 2 – 15, 2023 During the Special Late Season, harvest is restricted to antlerless deer and unbranched antlered bucks.

An unbranched antlered buck is any buck deer with an antler having no more than one point.

Dove: Besides the regular seasons for dove (Sept.

1 to Oct. 30, and then Dec.

17 2022 to Jan. 15, 2023, with a daily limit of 15 white- winged, mourning and white-tipped doves in the aggregate, to include no more than two whitetipped), there’s also a falconry season that runs from Nov. 18 to Dec. 4, 2022. Daily bag limit is three in the aggregate. Possession limit is three times the daily bag limit. Duck: Regular seasons include Nov. 6-7 for youth only, Veterans and Active Duty Military Nov. 5 - 6, 2022 along with two regular seasons: Nov. 12-Nov. 27 2022 and then Dec. 3 to Jan. 29, 2023. “Dusky” Ducks (mottled, Mexican like duck, black duck and their hybrids) maybe hunted Nov. 17-Nov. 27 and then Dec. 3, 2022 to Jan. 29, 2023. As for Falconry for ducks, that season is Jan. 30 to Feb.-13, 2023. Daily bag limit by falconry consists of three migratory game birds, singly or in the aggregate. Possession limit by falconry is nine game birds, singly or in the aggregate.

Turkey: There are fall and spring seasons for turkeys. Fall season is Nov. 5, 2022 to Jan. 1, 2023, while youth hunt from Oct. 2930-Nov. 1 and then Jan. 2-15, 2023. Also, for turkey hunting, in the fall there’s an archery only season from Oct. 1 to Nov. 4, 2022.

Bag composition can be either sex, while the annual bag limit for turkey, in the aggregate for all counties, is four, no more than one of which may be an Eastern turkey. In the spring, the season is April 2-May 15, 2022. Youth only season is March 26-27, 2022 and then May 21-22, 2022. Bag composition can be gobblers or bearded hens, while the annual bag limit for turkey, in the aggregate for all counties, is four, no more than one of which may be an Eastern turkey.
