Mustangs, Flames reach new highs, lows in 2020 sports

  • Taylor Ashbaugh and one of her UIL State swim meet competitors recognized each other’s strong performances during the 100-yard breaststroke event. Ashbaugh finished 11th at the meet — her second straight State meet appearance. Teammate and fellow State meet returnee Landry Stewart improved upon her 2019 performance with a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, a grueling race of stamina.

  • Mustangs junior kicker Logan Barnes sent the team to the second round of the postseason with his game winning 40-yard field goal against Brenham. Barnes had not kicked a single field goal prior to the playoff game but kicked two to beat the Cubs.

  • Mustang players Gabe Perez and Elijah Todd weren’t able to sneak up on Head Coach Brian Herman with the victory bath. Unfortunately, he saw them coming and braced for chilly impact. Herman started his postgame speech after the playoff win by reminding the players of his love for them.

Sometimes you don’t know a good thing until it’s gone; and if sports fans learned anything from 2020, it’s that competition means more than just a frivolous way to pass the time. The cancellation of spring sports — some of them during the State tournament — may have robbed several student athletes of the ability to compete, but it also taught the value of teamwork in unprecedented situations. …
