Residents throughout the Highland Lakes area hosted remembrances, ceremonies, patriotic halftime activities and a highway march to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Horseshoe Bay Fire Rescue made a statement Sept. 1 by honoring the memory of the 13 troops who died during a terrorist attack in Afghanistan in August. “[W]e have set thirteen table settings that will not be occupied this evening as a poignant reminder of their service and sacrifice. Heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things because it’s the right thing. They have families, children, and live, work and participate in all facets of the life of our community. These men and women are the first responders who are trained to answer the call when emergencies arise.

Horseshoe Bay fire crews, police and EMS, along with a ladder truck from Marble Falls, responded to a condo fire near the intersection of Poker Chip and Out Yonder shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday. According to HSB Fire Chief Brent Batla, when units arrived, there was heavy fire and smoke coming from the garage and upstairs window of the unit. He praised the job done by crews to keep the fire contained to the one unit and said all occupants of the building were safely out of harm’s way and no injuries were reported.
