The Marble Falls Mustangs football team kicks off their 2021 season tonight in Lampasas with a scrimmage against the Badgers.

All three teams – ninth grade, junior varsity and varsity – will be playing in the tune-up games. The subvarsity games are scheduled for 5 p.m. and the varsity game will kick off at 6:30 p.m.

The Mustangs are coming off their best season in quite some time after an appearance in the second round of the playoffs last year. Even in the postseason loss, the Mustangs gave Sherryland Pioneer everything they wanted and forced them to score a last-minute touchdown to send the boys in purple and gold home.

Several key players from the postseason run are returning this year including senior quarterback Jake Becker – now in his third season as starting quarterback – and senior center Hudson McBryde.

Becker improved in his junior season in both decision-making and throwing the football. Credit has to be given to McBryde and his fellow trenchmen as they continuously opened big holes in the running game.

The team’s second scrimmage will be at Mustang Stadium next Friday against Leander. On Aug. 27, the Mustangs begin the games that count with a home showdown against Lehman.
