TxDOT invites community to Wirtz road bridge public meeting

Significant rainfall brings relief to drought conditions
It has been a while since we last saw the floodgates in operation on the Highland Lakes chain of lakes. One photo shows one floodgate opened July 24 on Starke Dam. The LCRA has indicated that they are opening up to three floodgates at Starke before the flood waters have passed; only one floodgate was partially opened on the Wirtz Dam.

Granite Shoals stops Zooming meetings
In a unanimous vote Tuesday, Granite Shoals city council members quashed any future citizen off-premises participation in city council meetings by ending their Zoom participation. Citizens will still be able to watch the council livestream meetings but won’t be able to comment or ask questions unless they attend the meeting in person.

Burnet County commissioners received an up- date about their financial holdings July 23, during their regular meeting. During her third quar - ter report for Fiscal Year 2024, County Treasurer Karrie Crownover announced the county count- ed a total cash and invest - ment balance of more than $64.7 million through the end of last month.

Honey bees take Texas by storm
A few weeks ago an article appeared in the Killeen Daily Herald about Texas becoming the nation’s top beekeeping state. Mention was made in the article about a new Texas law created in 2012 that made it possible for people, even with small tracts of land, to get a property tax cut for keeping bees.

Granite Shoals paves way for street repairs and park project
Granite Shoals City Council members on Tuesday, July 23, moved forward on paving projects and set parameters for how particular land sale funds could be spent. Councilors approved a contract for $720,034 to pave King Circle, Hill Way and the fire department parking lot and gave their OK to a budget amendment to pay for the work.

Stormwater prompts floodgate operations
Area residents braced for flooding impact this week as stormwaters made their way through the Llano River, prompting the Lower Colorado River Authority to open floodgates. “The storm runoff that reached the Highland Lakes this week originated from heavy rains over the western portion of the Llano River watershed,” said LCRA spokeswoman Clara Tuma.

Marble Falls PEC team scores big wins at lineworkers rodeo
Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) lineworkers competed against the best in the state at the Texas Lineman’s Rodeo, bringing home first and second places in the Overall Journeyman category. The rodeo took place July 18-20 at Nolte Island Park near Seguin.
